Getting Involved in Your Community

Our Types of Volunteering article outlined just how many different things you can do if you’re considering getting involved in your community. Here we can tell you some more about these different opportunities and where you could look to kick start your volunteering aspirations!

A great place to look first is your local council website. They might have a whole host of projects that they are looking for volunteers for that will benefit your own community. Other places to target during your research should include community centres and local churches or places of worship – don’t worry, you don’t have to be follow a certain religion to get involved in these types of volunteering and they are often a great way to get to know people you wouldn’t ordinarily have met.

Aged Care Services

Charities like Age UK are always looking for extra volunteers to help them continue their life changing work with elderly people in communities. There will be a huge range of projects and activities that you could play a part in, for example being an activity buddy which would involve helping an older person to become more physically active. What better way to spend your time? Or perhaps as a befriender which involves visiting someone who lives alone – there are a lot of people out there who would give an arm and a leg to have a cup of tea and a chat with someone a few times a week (not forgetting the custard creams!).

Children and Youth Services

This area of community volunteering might involve tutoring students who need an extra helping hand outside of school or being involved in Drop-in centres for young people. What a great way to pass on your knowledge from your own experiences of being a young person to others! If you are considering a career in social work then this will also be brilliant experience for your future career.

Working with Animals

Local animal shelters and charities are never short of things that need doing so make perfect places for volunteers. Whether you’d like to walk abandoned pooches or work with assistant dogs like guide dogs, the best thing to do is get in touch with local animal shelters in your community and offer your services as a willing volunteer!
