Sample Artificial Intelligence Personal Statement.
In my view, human civilization has defined itself through its ability to produce equipment, tools and machines that make our lives easier and allow us to achieve increasingly great things. Without a doubt the technical advances that allowed us to enter the industrialized era were those of mechanical engineers, whose ability to harness the laws of physics through ground-breaking inventions created engines, machinery and vehicles that completely changed the world. The advent of electronics revolutionized the world in the twentieth century, with electronic and electrical engineers inventing life-changing devices such as radios, telephones and televisions. And in our present era advances in computers and robotics are once again redrawing the boundaries of human endeavour. I am equally passionate about all these different types of engineering, and earnestly await the possibility of studying one or more of these specialisms at university.
I devote a substantial amount of my time to learning about the different branches of engineering. Although this partly takes the form of reading books and websites related to engineering and watching technology-related documentaries, I like to learn through hands-on experimentation. I have spent hours immersed in creating electronics projects using my Maxitronix 500 in 1 Electronic Project Lab Kit, which has expanded my electronics knowledge considerably. I also enjoy learning about computer programming through self-study, and have enjoyed learning about different programming languages through experimentation. I take a similarly practical approach to learning about mechanical engineering through spending time on disassembling mechanical objects, with the goal of understanding how their constituent parts work together and to help me understand the principles of physics on which they are based.
I am closely involved with electronics and robotics club at my school. After working as part of a team that designed and built a fireman robot, I have since tried to build several other different types of robot. At school I also enjoy building electronic circuits; I find it extremely satisfying when I successfully complete an advanced-level circuit. My love of building robots and circuits is matched by a love of computers and the role they can play in complex industrial processes; one day I would like to own a factory that produces electronic components through making use of the most advanced computers and mechanical robotic technology available. I see studying engineering at university as a vital first step in helping me to fulfil this dream.
Friends describe me as a very industrious person with whom it is a pleasure to work due to my leadership skills, attention to detail and enthusiasm. I have acquired these skills through my part-time work experiences and my involvement in my passions of bowling and engineering. I spent a year working in a bowling pro shop as a sales assistant, where I learnt a range of professional skills. In the past I have held a summer job at a bakery. This experience was an interesting one because I learnt about the processes that lie behind producing baked goods in large quantities, which are surprisingly similar in their structure to the processes used in automated factories. Indeed, this experience helped stimulate my initial interest in automation and the role that computers and robots can play in industrial processes. I am an accomplished bowler, and am currently captain of the Iranian youth national bowling team, and am also in charge of the electronics and robotics club at my school. Both positions have taught me a great deal about leadership and management skills.
I am excited by the prospect of studying a subject about which I am so passionate in a country with such an excellent university culture as the United Kingdom. I hope the experience will be a first step on a long and rewarding journey through the world of engineering.
