Apprenticeships in Scotland work differently from England. Different names, different levels, different funding, and – in some ways – a better deal. Scotland has Foundation Apprenticeships (you can start while still at school), Modern Apprenticeships, and Graduate Apprenticeships (Scotland’s version of degree apprenticeships).

Note: T-Levels are England-only – they’re not available in Scotland.

Types of apprenticeships in Scotland

Foundation Apprenticeships

Unique to Scotland. Start in S5/S6 (ages 16–17) while still at school. Combine school study with work-based learning. Available in IT, engineering, creative industries, healthcare, business, and more. A brilliant way to test a career without leaving school.

Modern Apprenticeships

Scotland’s equivalent of England’s intermediate and advanced apprenticeships. Full-time employment with structured training. SCQF Levels 5–11. Available from age 16 with no upper age limit.

Graduate Apprenticeships

Scotland’s degree apprenticeships. Work full-time while studying for a degree at a Scottish university. Employer pays fees. SCQF Levels 8–11. Universities: Heriot-Watt, Glasgow Caledonian, Robert Gordon, Edinburgh Napier, Strathclyde.

Salaries are broadly comparable to England, but the lower cost of living in most of Scotland (compared to London and the South East) means your money goes further.

You spend part of the school week at a college or with an employer. It counts as a qualification alongside your Highers. It’s a great way to build experience and test a career without fully committing – something England doesn’t really offer in the same way.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, significantly. Scotland uses different terminology (Modern/Foundation/Graduate instead of Intermediate/Advanced/Degree), a different qualifications framework (SCQF instead of RQF), a different funding body (SDS instead of ESFA), and a different search tool (apprenticeships.scot instead of gov.uk).
