Medical Personal Statement 12

Sample Medical Personal Statement

Studying Medicine offers the potential to combine an intellectually stimulating subject, which includes ever expanding areas of new research, with the opportunity to make a real impact on the lives of others. Ever since visiting the refugee camps in my home country of Pakistan, I have been inspired by the dedication and skill of the medical staff that I observed working there, and the rewarding and worthwhile nature of the role. As I have pursued my studies in biology, I have also become steadily more fascinated by the workings of the human body, and the potential that a greater understanding of it holds for resolving many of the world’s most pressing problems.

I have worked hard to gain a strong foundation for further study in the field throughout my schooling. Despite facing serious medical problems during GCSE study, making me acutely aware of just how much illness impacts on all aspects of life, I managed to gain sufficient grades to progress to A-level study. Determined not let these past problems effect my future, I am currently studying towards A- and AS-levels as a private candidate and am predicted straight A grades.

I am also acutely aware that gaining this theoretical knowledge must be complemented by gaining practical knowledge of what working within the field of Medicine actually entails. Having undertaken training with Goldborough Home Care, I am currently employed working as a Care Assistant with Carewatch. This highly rewarding role offers many opportunities to hone my communication skills and to recognise the importance of a good bedside manner in the effective implementation of care plans. Each client is an individual, with individual medical and personal needs. It is my aim to remember this seemingly simple fact as I progress through my studies and into my career beyond. My work has also allowed me to gain practical medical skills which have added to my knowledge of the workings of the human body. I have received training certificates in cardiopulmonary and manual handling, for example, gaining experience of attending to the complex and varied physical needs of my clients.

Encountering a range of people with a range of conditions throughout this role has inspired me to look beyond the A-level syllabus and learn more about specific areas of medicine. Reading Cancer Biology by Roger King, for example, gave me an excellent insight into the ongoing research in this field and the huge potential that further research has for making significant breakthroughs. Learning more about issues such as genetics and stem cell research, through reading books on specific conditions such as cancer and Alzheimer’s, showed me intriguing avenues for future scientific exploration, which, alongside my practical experience in the field, inspire me to pursue knowledge that could make a difference in people’s lives. Reading about Alzheimer’s, in particular, inspired an interest in neurology that I am very keen to build on through further study and training.

As a School Prefect and a keen sportsman, regularly playing both cricket and basketball, I have also worked hard on honing my communication and team work skills in my spare time. These are essential for any doctor, as the role involves talking to patients in depth and coordinating treatment with a multi-disciplinary team where necessary. My ability to both follow advice and to provide strong, responsible leadership should allow me to successfully negotiate these aspects of the profession.

As a hardworking, conscientious student with a passion for the field and a positive attitude to study, I have overcome personal challenges to gain a strong knowledge of the theoretical and practical foundations necessary for studying Medicine. I believe that, throughout my learning and work experience, I have shown both the ability and the drive that will make me a valuable addition to the medical profession in the future.
