Sample Accounting Personal Statement
My ambition to study for a degree in accounting and to go on to make a career in the field springs partly from my own general aptitude for mathematical subjects and also from the inspiration and example offered to me by my family. I have worked in the accounting department of my father’s company during my summer vacations and have observed the accountants at work and learnt much from their activities. My immediate plan on graduating is to return to work for my father, to assist his business and to gain experience which can eventually be applied in my own company which I would hope to set up in due course. The business environment in China is developing and expanding at an unprecedented rate and I am eager to play my part in this new world of commerce. Accountancy attracts me because of its versatility and variety. There are very many ways in which the well qualified accountant can contribute to the success of modern enterprises, and to begin my career equipped with a UK degree in the subject would be the best possible entry into the profession, such is the reputation of British universities and of the business studies courses they offer. My parents are very keen for me to seize the opportunity to study in the UK and to expand my academic knowledge and skills.
I am very much aware that accountants from good universities with good degrees are very eagerly sought after by modern corporations, by charities, governments and individuals. Accountants play an increasingly central role in business planning and decision making, and so need good interpersonal skills as well as academic ability. The job is complex and calls for a real eye for detail and strong analytical ability. I appreciate that as an accountant I shall carry enormous responsibility, since businesses now rely on their accountants in the same way they rely on their lawyers. The accountant has to keep on top of complicated developments in tax and other laws, must be 100% accurate at all times and be able to work under considerable pressure. But the rewards are very great, both personal as well as material and to be a member of a well respected profession would be a great source of human satisfaction. I find the prospects very exciting.
I have developed my interest in the business world and in accountancy by reading journals and following economics stories in the media. It is very clear that the situation is changing rapidly and that it is essential to update one’s information regularly. Beyond the classroom, I believe that I have good communication skills and a lively and approachable temperament. I make friends easily and always enjoy being part of a team, both in everyday life and in my academic study. When my college organised a summer campus I was proud to be appointed a team leader, which taught me a great deal about working with others and understanding how to get along with them. I have worked as a volunteer in care homes for the elderly in China and always enjoyed the contact with other people and being able to serve their needs. I am open-minded and adventurous, always ready to try new things and consider new ideas.
I have a number of languages, Chinese, fluent English and some Japanese and Korean. I believe that such skills are an immense asset in today’s increasingly international and globalised economic environment. I also have highly trained IT skills, which I know are now central to the accountancy profession. I am hard-working, reliable and mature in my attitude, and very much committed to my chosen career path. I have a number of friends with whom I would hope eventually to set up a joint venture company, after working for some time in my father’s firm. I am academically able, enthusiastic, energetic and ambitious, and very much look forward to a successful career. I can offer my total commitment to my chosen course and I hope you will consider my application.
