  1. Name the four key areas and explain what they are. (GAPS)
  2. Find some examples of non-fiction and identify the following:
    1. Genre, Audience, Purpose, Style
    2. Find one piece of evidence for each of the above.
  3. Your school has been invited to host a competition between local schools. Choose one of the following: an Olympic sports tournament, a debating competition, a talent show or a cooking competition. Here are some questions you could answer to practice your writing skills:
    1. Write a letter informing parents about the event which is about to take place. Remember to give details, such as time, place, date, any costs involved.
    2. Write a letter to parents explaining the benefits of the school hosting an event.
    3. Your school has decided to take a vote on whether or not to host the event. You are excited about the idea and are worried it may not happen. Write an article in your school magazine to persuade other students to vote in favour of the event happening.
    4. Write an article for the local paper giving your opinion about the pros and cons of one of the events above. You should present both opinions but ultimately decide which view you take.
  4. Find a text which is written to persuade the reader. Write down five words and phrases which show you that this is the purpose of the author.
  5. Find a text which is written to inform. Write down five words and phrases which show you that this is the purpose of the author.
  6. Find a text which uses colour and images.
    1. What is its audience? How can you tell?

    3. Describe and analyse any other presentational features the text uses.
