Biomedicine Personal Statement Sample;

Growing up in an less economically developed country has been a difficult but has inspired me to devote myself to biomedicine and particularly the branch of Biomedical Engineering that I am applying for within this Masters degree. I hope to use my academic ability to make a strong success of this course and to go on to achieve great things in this field of medical technology over the course of my career.

In under developed countries disease and death often seem rather unpreventable, almost being part of a normal way of life, with a lack of technologies and medical care to help remedy the situation. However I began to realise the incredible powers of medical technology after witnessing how a person who had suffered from cardiac arrest was revived using an electric shock machine in a hospital in the UK, which was a real departure from what I had previously seen. Furthermore, I learned the importance of this technology in allowing many great medical practitioners fulfill their roles to an even higher standard, to save and to improve the health and recovery of huge numbers of patients. This was to forever alter the way I thought about medicine; suddenly I saw the opportunity for problem solving and innovation and this sparked my interest in Biomedical Engineering.

My determination to learn more about the development of technology for the medical field led me to study Biomedical Engineering at university in my native country, where I have consistently gained the top grades in my class. This marked the beginning of one of the most important phases of learning in my life. I was inspired by the idea that I could create something that can be used for the assessment, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases; both for patient care and rehabilitation and for the improvement of medical practice and health care delivery in my country. I have become particularly interested in medical imaging and the application of radiation. I am excited by the way Biomedical Engineering incorporates the fundamental concepts of Engineering, Biology and Medicine in the development of innovative approaches and creation of new devices, material systems etc for the medical industry. The fact that this technology is constantly progressing, constantly being developed further lifts my interest in the field and my ambition to be part of that positive progression.

Alongside my academic work, I have sought work experience within medical environments to see how Biomedical technology works for medical practitioners and for patients. Talking to the people who work with this technology was particularly insightful. I spent over 200 hours working in a local hospital in order to get to know the hospital, patients and to learn more about medicine and medical technology in practice. The experience was invaluable and has confirmed my desire to work in this area in the future. I also attended a course in strategic marketing management for the marketing of medical equipment. It was interesting to learn about the commercial side of this kind technological development, I feel I have gained a much deeper understanding of the biomedical industry as a result of this course.

I now wish to further my education in an outstanding institute with a renowned record for teaching and research. After several consultations with my professors and alumni, and considering that my sister already lives in London, I reached the conclusion that the best place for me to go to undertake the second stage of my biomedical training would be the United Kingdom. Eventually I want to take my expertise back to the Middle East, where we face a huge lack of medical equipment but also, sadly, a huge demand for it, owing to the wars between nations. I am a diligent worker and my goal oriented and approach drives to me to succeed. As such, I always put my very best into everything I undertake. Thus, my focus thus makes me determined to make a true success of this course, and I hope to mirror my past academic success.
