Degrees for Careers

There are many jobs out there that don’t require you to have a degree, but there are also careers that require you to have a specific degree. When you are considering what university course you want to study, the sort of job that it will lead to is a very important thing to think about. There are many degrees out there that are quite general and even once you have chosen your degree, your career options are not narrowed down at all. On the other hand, there are many specialised degrees that put you on exactly the right course for success in your chosen field. Here is a list of degree subjects and the corresponding jobs that they may lead to:

Arts and Sciences

Psychology – Clinical Psychologist (which requires further training), Human Resources, Organisational Psychologist.

Mathematics – Data Analyst, Accountancy, Banking.

Chemistry – Analytical Chemist, Chemical Engineer, Pharmacologist, Forensic Scientist.

Architecture – Architect, Architectural Technologist, Interior and Spatial Designer.

Business

Accounting and Finance – Accountancy (could you have guessed that one by yourself?!), Banking, Financial Advisor, Risk Assessor.

Business Studies – Chartered Accountant, Investment Banker, Risk Manager, Insurance Underwriter.

Education

Teaching/PGCE – Primary School Teacher, Secondary School Teacher, College Tutor, Further Education lecturer, Youth Worker, Community Education Officer.

Engineering and Computer Sciences

IT – IT Consultant, Technical Consultant, Information Systems Manager, Systems Analyst.

Engineering – Mechanical Engineer (perhaps in Formula 1, or maybe in an international company like Dyson!), Electrical Engineer, Civil Engineer.

Healthcare

Medical – Doctor (of course!), after which specialisation and further qualifying is an option. An early decision to be made is whether you would prefer to be a General Practice Doctor or Hospital Doctor.

Healthcare – Healthcare Assistant in a hospital, care home, hospice or other Healthcare setting.

Nursing – Nurses can work in a variety of settings, most commonly in hospitals. Specialisation is also an option, for example, paediatric, older adults, maternity or Oncology nursing.
