Background and History

The origins of Bournemouth University can be traced back to the foundation of Bournemouth Municipal College in the early twentieth century. Its successor, Bournemouth College of Technology, was created in the 1970s on the present Talbot campus. The college was renamed twice before becoming a polytechnic in 1990. In 1992 the institute was awarded university status and the power to award its own degrees.

Location and Accessibility

By Rail: The university's Lansdowne campus is a five-minute walk from Bournemouth station. University buses leave the station for the Talbot campus during term-time.

By Road: Both campuses are accessible via the A338. For the Talbot site, exit the Richmond Hill roundabout following signs to the university. For the Lansdowne campus take the exit marked 'Travel Interchange'. Follow St Swithuns Road and at the next roundabout take the right exit onto Christchurch road.
