The main Aberystwyth University campus sits high on Penglais Hill, with spectacular views over Aberystwyth and Cardigan Bay. In addition to being home for thousands of students, Aberystwyth is also where visitors will find the National Library of Wales.

Background and History

University College Wales first opened its doors in 1872. Some years later the college became a founding member of the University of Wales. In the 1960s the college relocated to the current Penglais campus. Since then the institution has continued to expand, in part thanks to financial assistance from the Welsh Government.

Location and Accessibility

By rail: Despite being tucked away in West Wales, Aberystwyth has good train links with the Midlands. Students travelling from the South of England or Scotland should be prepared for a long trip back and forth though.

By road: Aberystwyth is easy to reach using the A44 or A487.

Accessibility: The university has made a commitment to offering outstanding services for students with mobility issues. Special arrangements can be made for note-taking and exams, and library staff are happy to help with the use of specialist computing software.
