Being confident and competent in handling fractions, decimals and percentages can be related to being fluent in three different languages.

Fractions, decimals and percentages come up in many everyday situations and it is very helpful to be able to move between them and handle them with confidence.

Derived from Latin, fraction or ‘frangere’ means ‘broken number’ and we know that the top number of a fraction represents the numerator and the bottom number of a fraction represents the denominator.

A top heavy fraction is a fraction in which the size of the numerator exceeds the denominator, for example

By dividing the denominator into the numerator we can obtain a mixed number:

5 divided by 2 = 2
