About The University of Central Lancashire
Address and Location
UCLan's main campus is located on the outskirts of Preston. The university also has facilities at two other sites: the Burnley Campus is linked to Burnley College, while the Westlakes Campus is situated at Westlakes Science and Technology Park near Whitehaven, West Cumbria.Background and History
UCLan's roots go back to 1828 and the founding of Preston's Institution for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. Over the years, the institute was variously named Harris Art College, Preston Polytechnic and Lancashire Polytechnic, before being awarded university status and the power to award degrees in its own name in 1992.Location and Accessibility
By Rail: The main UCLan campus is a five-minute walk from Preston train station. Exit the station at Guild Way, then cross the road to Corporation Street. From there the university is ahead on the right.
By Road: Preston is easily accessible from the M6, follow signs for the city centre.
Accessibility: Most university facilities are wheelchair-accessible and accommodation is provided for students with disabilities.

Academic Facilities
UCLan boasts a newly-refurbished library at its Preston campus, providing a range of study environments, electronic resources, self-service borrowing facilities, open-access PCs, a media suite and a cafe. Laboratory facilities at the university are generally of a good standard, and UCLan continually invests in improving classrooms and other teaching facilities.Other on-site Amenities
UCLan's Students' Union is located at the heart of the university's Preston campus. The building is host to a wide variety of clubs, societies and volunteering opportunities and features a bar, various eateries and 53 Degrees, the university's well-known live music and club venue.Medical and Social Care
The university's health centre is located off Kirkham Street. Consultation with a doctor is available by appointment and nurses run a daily drop-in service. The university also provides a multi-faith worship centre.
What's on in the Area
European City of Sport in 2012, Preston provides a vibrant environment for students. In the city centre are a diverse range of shops, restaurants, bars and clubs, while theatre-goers flock to the Guild Hall and Charter Theatres. Liverpool and Sheffield are also close enough for day trips, if a study-escape is on the cards.
Moving On
The university runs a comprehensive careers service, offering CV advice and help for students seeking work experience. An appointment service is also available for students to raise concerns about future or ongoing employment.
