Bournemouth UniversityFern BarrowPooleDorsetBH12 5BBT: +44 (0)1202 524 111The origins of Bournemouth University can be traced back to the foundation of Bournemouth Municipal College in the early twentieth century. Its successor, Bournemouth College of Technology, was created in the 1970s on the present Talbot campus. The college was renamed twice before becoming a polytechnic in 1990. In 1992 the institute was awarded university status and the power to award its own degrees.
By Rail: The university's Lansdowne campus is a five-minute walk from Bournemouth station. University buses leave the station for the Talbot campus during term-time.
By Road: Both campuses are accessible via the A338. For the Talbot site, exit the Richmond Hill roundabout following signs to the university. For the Lansdowne campus take the exit marked 'Travel Interchange'. Follow St Swithuns Road and at the next roundabout take the right exit onto Christchurch road.
Accessibility: Students with additional needs are well-catered for. The university is equipped with automatic doors, lifts, ramps, disabled toilets and hearing loop systems across both campuses.

Bournemouth offers a range of self-catered accommodation to suit different budgetsand tastes. Halls are located in Bournemouth town centre, near Poole harbour and in Pokesdown. All are easily accessible from the two campuses.
The university offers support to second and third-year students looking for accommodation. Properties nearer the waterfront and town centre are generally more expensive, so head to the outskirts for cheaper options.
Bournemouth provides the largest centre for advanced media studies in the UK. The university is internationally recognised for its courses in tourism, leisure, hospitality and retail, and is the leading South-West institution for nursing, midwifery and social work.
Undergraduate courses currently cost £9,000 per year. Fees for international students and postgraduates vary.
Financial Support: A variety of scholarships and means-tested bursaries are available to undergraduates and postgraduates. Check the university website for more details.
The university's Talbot campus offers 15 state-of-the-art lecture theatres. The Sir Michael Cobham central library provides an extensive collection of books, journals and other resources, as does Bournemouth House Library on the Lansdowne campus. The Open Access Centre allows 24/7 access to computers and wi-fi is provided on all campuses.
Talbot offers a range of food outlets, shops and bars. Sports facilities include a fitness suite, various sports halls and pitches, a climbing wall and squash, tennis and badminton courts. The Student Union is home to a wide range of clubs and societies.
The university medical centre is based on Talbot campus and offers a range of health services. Counsellors are available and a multi-faith chaplaincy also offers support to students.
Bournemouth is one of the UK's most picturesque coastal towns. Students can enjoy watersports and secluded beaches during study-breaks. West of the town lies World Heritagecoastline, with Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove a daytrip away. By night, Bournemouth International Centre, the Pavilion Theatre and the Pier Theatreprovide a range of music and entertainment alongside cinemas, restaurants, bars and clubs. Nearby Poole also hosts shows and exhibitions at theLighthouse, and is home to a mulitplex and arts cinema.
The university's Placements and Careers Service offers careers support to students and recent graduates. A range of resources are available, and the experienced team are on hand to offer CV and interview tips, as well as help finding part-time work.
MPs Angela Browning and David Amess are both former Bournemouth students, as is Match of the Day commentator Dan O'Hagan. The production teams behind many Radio 1 shows are also made up of Bournemouth alumni.
Bournemouth's strength lies in its vocational courses, which focus on preparing graduates for the real world. If a career in tourism, hospitality or media is your aim then the university makes an excellent choice - less so for those with academic aspirations. If beautiful Bournemouth isn't big enough for you, consider Nottingham Trent or UWE, both of which have a similar vocational ethos.
