Address and Location

Bishop Grosseteste University is based in uphill Lincoln, close to the historic city castle and cathedral. Many of the college's buildings date back to the nineteenth century, interspersed by recent additions like the newly-extended library.  

Background and History

Established in 1862 as an Anglican teacher training college for the diocese of Lincoln, the university gained full degree-awarding powers in 2006. The college takes its present name from Robert Grosseteste, a thirteenth century bishop, theologian and scholar.

Location and Accessibility

By road: Lincoln is not easily reached by motorway. To get there, join the A46 Lincoln bypass and follow signs for Lincoln North. At the joining roundabout with the A15, head towards the city centre along Riseholme Road to the first roundabout, then turn left and follow the first exit into Longdales Road. The entrance to the visitors' and student car park is approximately 100 metres on the right.

By rail: Lincoln Train Station is a 10-minute taxi ride from the campus. Walking to the campus from the station will take around 25-30 minutes, but be warned - it's uphill all the way!

Entry Requirements

Entry requirements vary depending on the level of the course (i.e. foundation, undergraduate or postgraduate) Check with the university for details. Foundational courses require applicants to have a current (or prospective) voluntary or paid role in a school or early years, youth or community setting for at least 12 hours a week.

University Accommodation

Bishop Grosseteste hosts two sets of halls close to the uphill campus, significantly redeveloped in 2013 to offer self-catered accommodation for the first time. First-year students are guaranteed a space in university-owned halls provided they put the university down as their first UCAS choice.

Off-site Accommodation

A short walk from the Bishop Grosseteste campus is Crosstrend House Student Development, with 73 en suite rooms and a number of shared lodgings. First years who miss out on the on-campus rooms will have spaces reserved from them at Crosstrend.

Academic Strengths and Research

Bishop Grosseteste focuses mainly on teacher-teaching courses, which form the majority of foundational and undergraduate degrees awarded by the university.

Tuition Fees

Fees for UK and EU students studying full-time undergraduate courses are £9000 per year. Fees for international students, postgraduates and foundation courses vary.

Academic Facilities

In 2013, Princess Anne opened the extended main library in the centre of the campus, which benefits from a growing academic collection and the super-fast wi-fi provided throughout the university. Ten minutes from the university campus is The Venue, which acts as a performing arts theatre in the daytime and a state-of-the-art cinema by night.

Other on site Amenities

Bishop Grosseteste has a lively sporting community, hosted by a basic, free sports centre with indoor and outdoor games pitches and a gym. The BG Football Club has three teams; two male and one female. Netball is well-established at Bishop Grosseteste, while Rugby Union and Badminton are becoming increasingly popular. The university has a very active Students' Union, providing students with live music, live comedy, quizzes, karaoke, themed pub crawls and an annual charity music and arts festival, 'The BG Fringe'.

Medical and Social Care

Bishop Grosseteste prides itself on its inclusive, supportive community. Students are asked to register with a doctor in the city and are able to use the university's student counselling and advice services when necessary.

What's On In The Area?

Lincoln is growing fast, and while it might be tricky to get to, the city makes it's own fun. As well as the university's own entertainment facilities, there are traditional pubs throughout the city and a new entertainment complex at the city's marina. History lovers are also well-served, being surrounded by preserved buildings and museums focused on the city's rich past.

Bishop Grosseteste have a dedicated careers service in place to help students make future plans and prepare for the workplace. The careers team use workshops, lectures and one-on-one sessions, and are available as part of a confidential and impartial service.

The city of Lincoln dates back 2000 years; on a walk from the Roman Marina to the top of Steep Hill (and the university), you'll pass a Norman castle before reaching the stunning medieval cathedral. Be sure to visit the Bishop's Palace for a view over the city. Paralympic medallist Jade Etherington and West End producer David Pugh both studied at Bishop Grosseteste.
