About St George's Hospital Medical School

Address and Location

Once located at Hyde Park Corner, St George's has since moved across London to Tooting. All of the college's teaching facilities are contained on one site, which comprises St George's Medical School and St George's Hospital.

Background and History

St George's was the second specialised medical school to open in the UK, and can trace its heritage back to 1733. Originally based at Hyde Park Corner, expansion and refurbishment of college facilities eventually proved insufficient to cope with London's growing population; in 1980 the university and adjoining hospital moved to a purpose-built site in Tooting, South London.

Location and Accessibility

By Rail: St. George's is closest to Tooting Broadway and Wimbledon Park Tube stations.

By Road: As with any London university, driving to campus is generally not advisable; if necessary, the university is accessible from the A24 or A3.

Accessibility: Most university facilities are wheelchair-accessible and accommodation is provided for students with disabilities.

What's on Offer

BSc, MSc, MRes, PgDip, MBB, PhD

Entry Requirements

Entry standards at St George's are high and candidates for medicine must show a passion for their subject before applying. Most courses require AAA-ABB at A Level.

Accommodation is available on-site, at Horton Hall, or in one of the University of London halls elsewhere in the city. All bedrooms at Horton Hall are en suite with a shared kitchen.

Private Accommodation

Tooting and nearby Clapham are vibrant and interesting areas of London, offering cheap, middling and eye-wateringly expensive rental accommodation. The University of London offers support for students searching for housing.

Courses & Fees

Academic Strengths and Research Profile

St George's is a focused, specialist institution which regularly wins awards and commendations for its teaching. The Quality Assurance Association previously rated it as the best medical school in London. Because the institute regularly attracts research funding, students are provided with plenty of opportunities to pursue funded biomedical PhDs.

Tuition Fees

Undergraduate courses currently cost £9,000 per year. Fees for international students and postgraduates vary.

Financial Support: A variety of scholarships and means-tested bursaries are available to undergraduates and postgraduates. Check the university website for more details.

Facilities at St George's Hospital Medical School

Academic Facilities

As well as neighbouring St George's Hospital, the university medical school provides a large number of workstations, libraries and teaching rooms for students. Research facilities include special units for drug discovery, proteomic, genetic and toxicological research.

Other on-site Amenities

Although facilities are more limited than at other universities in London, St George's does have its own on-site student bar, sports centre, cafe and common rooms. A wealth of additional amenities (including access to sports pitches) are available through the University of London.

Medical and Social Care

St George's doesn't need a medical centre - the university is its own hospital! A chaplaincy is also provided, alongside prayer rooms and a student counselling service.

What's on in the Area

The area immediately around the hospital features a golf course, lawn tennis courts, Deen City Farm and Wimbledon Common. Clapham is also home to a growing nightclub scene. For things cultural, students head to South Bank - home of the National Theatre, Tate Modern and Royal Festival Hall.

Moving On

Graduate employability at St George's is extremely high given the nature of the courses taught at the institute. An impressive 91% of students find work within six months of leaving the university.

Did you know?

St George's was the first UK university to offer a four-year graduate-entry programme for Medicine. Notable college alumni include Henry Gray, author of Gray's Anatomy', and Edward Jenner, discoverer of the smallpox vaccine.

Is St George's right for you?

St George's is the best medical school in London and by extension one of the best in the UK. Students at the college are taught by highly qualified academics using state-of-the-art facilities. Prospective students should also consider the well-regarded medical faculties at King's College and UCL, both fellow members of the University of London.
