Ruskin College is an independent educational institution in Oxford specialising in the provision of educational opportunities to those adults without qualifications. Ruskin Hall, the teaching centre, is located about three and a half miles outside of the town of Oxford.
General information
Founded in 1899, Ruskin College was originally designed to provide the working classes with university standard education so that working class organisations could operate more effectively. Today, it remains an independent college that specialises in providing educational opportunities for adults with few or no qualifications, aiming to change the lives of those who need a second chance in education within the informal setting of a small residential college.
The college is an affiliate, not a constituent of the University of Oxford, allowing students special privileges such as attending lectures and the use of most facilities.
The College recognises that many adults can feel nervous about returning to study and may be unsure about where to even begin. In response to this, Ruskin offers a range of programmes at varying levels, in a number of different subjects.
The levels range from level 1 - equivalent to some GCSE grades (in the form of Short Courses), up to level 5 - postgraduate degrees, with all courses being validated by the Open University.
The College operates around 4 core subject areas that constitute the different qualifications, these are:
Asides from the great luxury of sharing the University of Oxford's unparalleled academic facilities, the college boasts its own library which has around 40,000 books.A £17m redevelopment of the college is ongoing, already the college has seen the instalment of new library and IT facilities.
Provision of support for learning is a key element at Ruskin. All students are assessed for specific needs when they join the College. Support is provided through specialist Learning Support Tutors as well as Personal Tutors, whom are allocated individually to students when they commence their studies and remain on hand for students to consult at any time during their time at Ruskin College.
