About The University of Reading

Address and location

Split across four campuses in Reading, with an additional site in Malaysia due to open in 2014, Reading University is a traditional institution which is very much looking to the future.

Background and history

Established in 1892 as an extension of Oxford University's Christ Church College, Reading gained independent university status when it was granted a Royal Charter in 1926. From that point on it moved from strength to strength, undertaking various mergers, most recently with Henley Management College, to become the university it is today.

 Location and accessibility

Rail: Trains from London to Reading run every 15-20 minutes and take roughly half an hour. The various campuses are a short bus or taxi ride away from the station.

Road: For the main Whiteknights campus leave the M4 at Junction 11 and follow the signs for the University.

The Disability Office has a well-established support team for students with disabilities or dyslexia. They supply information packs, organise specific campus tours and provide appropriate accommodation amongst other services.

In addition to the raft of recently constructed facilities, students enjoy the use of extensive IT and Library services, with over 600 computer stations available, many 24 hours a day, and nearly 1 million books in the Library.

Other on-site amenities

Reading has a strong sporting tradition, especially in water sports, and has some of the best facilities of any UK university. From traditional sports to the more unusual the University has nearly 50 clubs to cater to all tastes. The University's award-winning Students' Union houses multiple bars, restaurants and shops, in addition to a brand new nightclub. For students with slightly more responsibilities, the Union also runs two childcare services for children aged between three months and five years.

Medical and social care

Students are well cared for at Reading, with a University Medical Practice, containing a GP surgery and a dentist, only a short walk from the main Whiteknights campus. The Christian Chaplaincy and the Muslim Centre, both on the Whiteknights campus, likewise provide support to students.

 What's on in the area

Be it a relaxing walk along the Thames or a mud-caked dance at the world famous festival there's plenty to see and do in Reading. Culturally visitors are spoiled for choice, whether it's a trip to the ruins of the medieval Reading Abbey, a stroll round one of the many museums or a visit to the site of Oscar Wilde's incarceration at Reading Jail. For those who enjoy a slower pace a day meandering around the many shops or ambling through the nearby picturesque villages is in order.

 Moving on

2011 was a successful year for the Student Employment Experience and Careers Centre (SEECC) as it announced the best student employability results for a decade. Clearly students are Reading are offered plenty of help to improve their chances after university. This includes careers fairs, employability workshops and, more importantly, the opportunity for all undergraduates to have a work-based learning placement'.

The University is lucky enough to have its own botanical gardens. Reading was the only institution to be given full university status between World War I and World War II. Notable former pupils include the Olympic gold medal winner James Cracknell, the war poet Wilfred Owen and the jazz signer Jamie Cullum.
