Formerly known as the Plymouth College of Art and Design, Plymouth College of Art is a specialist arts college located in the English city of Plymouth. The college has its own campus situated within the cultural heart of the city centre.
General information
The College has a very proud history. The original Plymouth School of Art dates back a very long way and was opened on 21 January 1856. Over time the School has had various locations, none of them more than a hundred yards or so from the present position. The buildings currently housing the school were built in 1974, although the college grounds were recently given a £5 million refurbishment.
The Plymouth College of Art provides Further and Higher education courses. These courses cater for all backgrounds and ages, be it GCSE's, A-levels, or for those students who wish to gain access to an art and design degree. Since 2006, the college has developed strong links with the Open University, leading to Open University validated awarding powers. The paths available to students constitute the following:
Further Education:- A levels - Students study Photography and Fine Art at AS/GCE A-level, then choose to elect two further subjects from Graphic Communication or Textile Design, Critical and Contextual Studies (Art History) or English Literature or Business Studies (new for 2013). There are also BTECs andFoundation Diplomas.
Higher Education:- Foundation degrees- Top-up Honours Programmes- BA Honours Programmes. These courses provide a vocational art and design education, specialising in the fields of art, design, crafts and media.
Postgraduate Courses:- The College runs a range of MA programmes in subjects from Contemporary Crafts to Entrepreneurship for Creative Practice.
Plymouth College of Art's Learning Resource centre has more than 20,000 specialist titles and the college has established relationships with a number of national bodies, including the British Film Institute (BFI). There is also an art supplies shop where students can stock up on any shortages of arts equipment. Students benefit from hosting the Plymouth School of Art Gallery as they are able to broadcast examples of their work.
The College's Student Union is active in promoting Student clubs and societies as well as ensuring student welfare is upheld. Some of the societies include; TheExtreme Sports Society, Film Society, Meditation Society, Photography Society, Surf Society and Sports Society.
