About Norwich University of the Arts

An independent arts university in the centre of Norwich, Norwich University of the Arts (NUA), is located in the heart of Norwich. With gallery space and computer suites, it is amongst the United Kingdom's best arts schools.

 

Background and History

NUA's history goes back to 1845, when the Norwich School of Design opened. In 1965, the School began offering a diploma in Art and Design, and it became an arts school in 1994. In 2007, NUA gained the power to award degrees and was renamed the Norwich University of the Arts.

Location and Accessibility

The University can be reached via direct train from London in two hours, with trains departing and arriving every half hour. Norwich can be reached via the South through the M11, A11, A12 and from the North via the A14, A47, and M1.

The campus is wheelchair accessible.

The UCAS tariff is 280-300 UCAS points, including a relevant subject.

Accommodation at Norwich University of the Arts

University Accommodation

The university owns two buildings for rent, with rooms at £110 to £127 depending on size.  

Private Accommodation

Average rent per person per month in Norwich ranges from £350 per person per month for a single room in a house, to around £400 per person per month for multiple-occupancy middle-range housing. The most you should expect to spend for a two-bedroom house would be £500 per month, but that is the absolute upper limit.

Academic Strengths and Research Profile

The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise praised NUA's world-leading research in the arts, particularly in Animation and Moving Image Production. Despite its relatively recent formation, NUA is a well-respected arts institution.

Facilities at Norwich University of the Arts

Academic Facilities

The library includes over 300,000 books, which is more than adequate for a university of NUA's size and purposes. In addition to a designated Gallery space, there is a darkroom, photo editing and video production software available in the libraries and in the designated IT areas.

 

Other on-site Amenities

NUA has an on-site gallery, the Bar NUA, a modern timber building featuring poetry readings, music gigs and coffee mornings, and a discounted art supplies shop.

 

Medical and Social Care

Students are required to register with a local GP.

What's on in the Area

Norwich was recently voted one of the best small cities in the world, and it has a variety of night clubs, bars, restaurants, museums and cinemas.

   

Moving On

NUA has a Careers Service, that as well as providing support putting together CVs and portfolios, also provides support with logistics and the challenges of working as an artist. After graduating, graduates can renew their membership of this service on a three-yearly basis in perpetuity.

Keith Chapman, creator of Bob the Builder', is a NUA graduate.

Michael Andrews, the deceased British painter, was born in Norwich and educated at NUA.

The original school followed a strict artistic model, establishing a reputation across Europe for landscape painting.
