An independent arts university in the centre of Norwich, Norwich University of the Arts (NUA), is located in the heart of Norwich. With gallery space and computer suites, it is amongst the United Kingdom's best arts schools.
NUA's history goes back to 1845, when the Norwich School of Design opened. In 1965, the School began offering a diploma in Art and Design, and it became an arts school in 1994. In 2007, NUA gained the power to award degrees and was renamed the Norwich University of the Arts.
The University can be reached via direct train from London in two hours, with trains departing and arriving every half hour. Norwich can be reached via the South through the M11, A11, A12 and from the North via the A14, A47, and M1.
The campus is wheelchair accessible.
The library includes over 300,000 books, which is more than adequate for a university of NUA's size and purposes. In addition to a designated Gallery space, there is a darkroom, photo editing and video production software available in the libraries and in the designated IT areas.
NUA has an on-site gallery, the Bar NUA, a modern timber building featuring poetry readings, music gigs and coffee mornings, and a discounted art supplies shop.
Students are required to register with a local GP.
Norwich was recently voted one of the best small cities in the world, and it has a variety of night clubs, bars, restaurants, museums and cinemas.
NUA has a Careers Service, that as well as providing support putting together CVs and portfolios, also provides support with logistics and the challenges of working as an artist. After graduating, graduates can renew their membership of this service on a three-yearly basis in perpetuity.
Michael Andrews, the deceased British painter, was born in Norwich and educated at NUA.
The original school followed a strict artistic model, establishing a reputation across Europe for landscape painting.
