Information

About London Metropolitan University

London Met has campuses in the City of London and further north on Holloway Road in Islington. Both are served by excellent transport connections making it easy to commute from other areas of London.

Background and History

London Met can trace its routes back to 1848 with the formation of London Guildhall University, done at the behest of the Bishop of London to improve moral standards amongst young men in the city. London Met was formed in 2002 when London Guildhall merged with the University of North London.

Location and Accessibility

By Rail: The Holloway Road campus can be accessed by tube via Holloway Road station which is on the Piccadilly line. National rail services are available from the nearby Drayton Park station.

By Road: Driving is not recommended as parking is very limited and Holloway Road gets very congested during rush hour. If you do drive, the A1 (Holloway road) links up with the M1 and the M25. Most facilities are wheelchair friendly and accommodation is available designed for usage by people with disabilities.

What's on Offer

BA, BSc, MA, MSc, MBA, Graduate (Conversion) Diploma, Graduate Diploma, Postgraduate Diploma, Postgraduate Certificate, MRes, MPhil, PhD.

Entry Requirements

The normal minimum entry requirement for London Met is two passes at A-level combined with two GCSEs at grade C or above. Entrance is flexible, however, and access courses and foundation years are alternative methods of acceptance.

Accommodation at London Metropolitan University

University Accommodation

London Met has a vast number of halls, most of which are near the two campuses, but some are much further away in Wembley and Enfield. Make sure you check travel times to the campus you're based at before you sign up.

Private Accommodation

Accommodation around Holloway Road is good value for a relatively central London location, although some areas of Islington are quite pricey. A number of private halls of residence operate in the area which many students choose to stay in during their second and third years.

Courses & Fees

Faculties and Departments

London Metropolitan University is divided into a number of schools and faculties: the Faculty of Architecture and Spatial Design, the Sir John Cass Faculty of Art, Media and Design, the London Metropolitan Polymer Centre, the London Metropolitan Business School, the Faculty of Computing, the Faculty of Life Sciences, the School of Psychology, the School of Human Sciences, the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, the Faculty of Law, Governance and International Relations

Academic Strengths and Research Profile

London Met has ensured that a large number of its degrees are accredited by appropriate professional bodies such as the Royal Institute of British Architects or the Law Society so a level of quality has been established with industry partners. It has also developed a centre of excellence in the field of Purchasing and Logistics.

Tuition Fees

Tuition fees vary depending upon the course of study or whether you wish to study at undergraduate or postgraduate level. Fees for international students are also likely to be considerably higher than those for UK/EU students. For further details it is advisable to contact the university directly or visit their website.

Financial Support

The main form of financial support available at London Met is through the National Scholarship Programme which offers a means-tested reduction in fees. There is also a Merit Scholarship Programme for high achieving students.

Facilities at London Metropolitan University

Academic Facilities

There are a number of libraries including collections in specialist subjects such and the Women's Library and the Trade Union Collection. Other specialist facilities include a recording studio, a practice courtroom, a flight simulator, a trading-floor simulator and a lightning simulator.

Other on-site Amenities

Facilities available for students include two modern gyms, Olympic standard basketball courts, two campus bars, plentiful IT provision and a number of cafes. The club night hosted by the Students' Union was previously voted as the best student night out by Time Out magazine.

Medical and Social Care

There is a health centre onsite which offers complete health services to students. There is also an onsite nursery provision increasing the flexibility of study for students with children. The university has a dedicated chaplain and an Imam offering religious services on both campuses and the Holloway Road Mosque is a short walk away.

What's on in the Area

Holloway Road is known for its bustling nightlife with gig venues such as Nambucca on your doorstep. Football fans will enjoy the extremely close proximity to Arsenal's home stadium although this will mean parking is difficult on match days. There are a number of cinemas and theatres in the area including regular comedy at The Pleasance, which hosts warm ups for new acts' famous Edinburgh shows. For a more alternative night out Camden is not far away.

Moving On

London Met ranks fairly lowly for student employability but they are trying to improve this by accredited degrees through professional bodies, reducing their offering to focus on standards and giving employability workshops to students.

Did you know?

Notable Alumni include Zoe Ball and Tracey Emin. Famous historian A.J.P Taylor used to be on the teaching staff.

Is London Met right for you?

There are a number of flexible methods of entry so students are not excluded if they have no formal qualifications. It ranked last in the country in the 2012 league tables and also has poor employability and high drop out rates. Many courses ceased to exist in 2012 due to a re-organisation. Why not consider Westminster, UEL or South Bank?
