The University of Liverpool

Address and Location

The University of Liverpool is set in expansive grounds in the centre of the city. Focus is set on the landmark Victoria building, a nineteenth-century gallery space and museum which serves to contrast against the modern facilities of the rest of the university.

Background and History

The university's roots date back to 1881, when the institution was founded as University College Liverpool. It wasn't until 1903 that college gained recognition as an independent university. Since then, eight Nobel Prize winners have studied at Liverpool, and the university has earned itself an international reputation for academic excellence.

Location and Accessibility

By Rail: Trains from all directions run regular services to Liverpool Lime Street. The station is a short walk to the main campus, along London Road and Pembroke Place.

By Road: To reach the university, stay on the M62 until it joins the A5080/A5047. From there the campus is well-signposted.

Entry Requirements

Successful applicants typically achieve a minimum of 400 UCAS points. The university also looks for a basic standard of literacy and numeracy.

University Accommodation

The university is able to guarantee accommodation for all students offered a place. Prices vary widely between self-catered, semi-catered and fully-catered halls.  

Private Accommodation

There is high demand for private student accommodation in the city's Opal Court, Prospect Point, Lennon Studios and Capital Gate areas. Considerably cheaper options can be found along Smithdown Road and Penny Lane.

Academic Strengths and Research Profile

Liverpool has an excellent reputation for the quality of its courses across the arts, humanities and physical, biomedical and life sciences. Over half of the university's research staff have been ranked as world-leading in recent Research Assessment Exercises.  

Tuition fees

Undergraduate courses currently cost £9,000 per year. Fees for international students and postgraduates vary.  

Financial Support: A variety of scholarships and means-tested bursaries are available to undergraduates and postgraduates. These include awards for sporting excellence. Check the university website for more details.

Academic Facilities

Alongside the two main university libraries, students have access to a virtual learning environment containing thousands of e-books and important course materials. Advanced learning resources are used in the many lecture theatres and classrooms and wi-fi is provided across campus.

Other on-site Amenities

The university campus is well-served by banks, a sports and fitness centre and various cafes and restaurants. The Guild plays hosts to high-profile concerts and is a favourite student hang-out.

Medical and Social Care

Liverpool offers a high standard of student healthcare, with a main facility at Brownlee Group Practice. The university welcomes all faiths and provides prayer rooms across campus.  

What's on in the Area

Liverpool's galleries are home to several masterworks of art many excellent museums. As is to be expected, the choices for evening entertainment are many, for live dance and art students can visit the Bluecoat or stay on-campus and enjoy live music at the university Guild.

Moving On

The Liverpool Careers and Employability Service has won awards for its advice and support services. Alongside CV workshops and help completing application forms, the university has well-established links with local business and is able to offer a variety of work placement opportunities. Job fairs are held regularly, giving students the chance to speak with potential recruiters.

Sir Winston Churchill, Sir David Attenborough, Dame Beryl Bainbridge and Melvyn Bragg have all been awarded honorary degrees by the University of Liverpool. Former students include poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy, DJ Nick Grimshaw and TV presenter Jon Snow.

Is Liverpool University the place for you?

If your budget is low but your academic ambition high, economical Liverpool makes an excellent choice for study. Especially excellent are the university's courses in the health sciences, law and architecture. The university is a large one, however. For something smaller, try theUniversity of Buckingham or University of Wales, Lampeter.
