About The University of Leeds

The University of Leeds is a campus university, with its main campus located one mile north of the city centre. Numerous bus services operate from the campus.

Background and History

The University of Leeds was founded in 1904, but its origins go back to 1831, when the Leeds School of Medicine was founded (followed by the Yorkshire College of Science in 1874). It is one of the UK's six red brick universities, and part of the 20-strong Russell Group of research intensive universities.

Location and Accessibility

Rail: The University of Leeds is a 20-minute walk from Leeds station. Exit the station and head straight up Park Row. Cross The Headrow and continue up Cookridge Street, passing Millennium Square on your left and Leeds City Museum on your right. Turn left on to Woodhouse Lane, passing Leeds Metropolitan University. Carry on walking for 50 metres and the University of Leeds campus will be on your left.

Road: Leeds is easily linked to the M1 and M62, but be warned that parking on campus is limited. The main entrance to the campus is the address given above (LS2 9JT).

Most buildings and facilities are wheelchair friendly, and accommodation designed for people with disabilities is available. Further information can be found by calling the University's disability services on 0113 343 3927.

Accommodation at The University of Leeds

University Accommodation

The University of Leeds provides a 15-strong choice of self-catered residences. Catered accommodation, of which there is a choice of four residences, is considerably more expensive.

Private Accommodation

Alternatively, you may prefer a flat/house share if you don't fancy University accommodation. The most popular areas for house shares are Hyde Park and Headingley, though both incorporate high rent and high burglary rates. Some students have chosen to live in cheaper parts of the city, such as Beeston, where the amenities and services (e.g. bus routes) are just as good.

Courses & Fees

Faculties and Departments

The University of Leeds is split into nine different faculties: the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Biological Sciences, the Faculty of Business, the Faculty of Education, Social Sciences and Law, the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Environment, the Faculty of Mathematics and Physical Sciences, the Faculty of Medicine and Health and the Faculty of Performance, Visual Arts and Communications.

Academic Strengths and Research Profile

The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise ranked the University of Leeds 8th, the highest in the Yorkshire and Humber region.

Tuition Fees

Tuition fees at the University of Leeds vary depending on the course of study and whether you are studying at undergraduate or postgraduate level. Fees for international students are likely to be considerably higher than those for UK/EU students. For further information it is advisable to contact the university directly or visit their website.

Financial Support

Bursaries are available, based on household income. The system is linked to Student Finance England, meaning you don't have to apply for a bursary as your household income details (given as part of your student finance application) will be passed on to the University, who will then work out whether you are entitled to a bursary or not.

Facilities at The University of Leeds

Academic Facilities

The University campus has three main libraries, the Brotherton Library, Edward Boyle Library and newly refurbished Health Sciences Library. There is a total of 4,000 study spaces, and all offer access to wireless networks for those wishing to use their laptops.

Other On-Site Amenities

Alongside the usual union nights, bars, shops and sport, Leeds University Union offers 300 clubs and societies to suit every taste.

Medical and Social Care

The University's health service (Leeds Student Medical Practice) is situated on Blenheim Walk and is available to all students who register. Meanwhile, a multi-faith chaplaincy service is available, serving the University of Leeds as well as Leeds Metropolitan University students.

What's on in the Area

Leeds city centre is one of the biggest (and most attractive) in the country, home to historic landmarks such as the Corn Exchange and Victoria Quarter. Furthermore, you will never be short of culture, with multiple art galleries, theatres and live music venues. And for such a diverse city, it is of course a great night out. There are over ten clubs in the city centre alone, not to mention masses of pubs and bars. Football and rugby league fans will respectively have the opportunity to enjoy Leeds United FC and Leeds Rhinos.

Moving On

The University runs an extensive careers service, which promises to help you in everything from choosing the right career to fine-tuning job applications and everything in between.
