Leeds Metropolitan University has two campuses: the City Campus in the heart of Leeds city centre and the Headingley Campus, three miles away in the area of the same name.  

Background and History

Leeds Metropolitan University was founded in 1992, when Leeds Polytechnic was given university status and subsequently renamed. The university's origins go back much further however, to 1824 and the founding of the Leeds Mechanics Institute.

Location and Accessibility

By Rail: Leeds Metropolitan University is a 20-minute walk from Leeds station. Exit the station and head straight up Park Row. Cross The Headrow and continue up Cookridge Street, passing Millennium Square on your left and Leeds City Museum on your right. On reaching Woodhouse Lane, turn left. The Headingley campus is best reached from Headingley station. Exit the station and turn left onto Kirkstall Lane, then left onto Otley Road. The university is a short distance away on the left.

By Road: Leeds is easily accessible via the M1 and M62. Parking is strictly limited on campus, however; instead, travel to the city centre and catch a bus to either site.

Accessibility: Most university buildings and facilities are wheelchair-friendly and accommodation is provided for students with disabilities.

Entry Requirements

Entry standards vary between courses. Most require a minimum of 200 UCAS points. Specific course information can be found on the university website.

University Accommodation

Leeds Met provides over 4,500 rooms for first-year students, most of which come with en suite bathroom facilities.  

Private Accommodation

Most popular for second and third years looking for accommodation are the Hyde Park and Headingley areas, although both have suffered from burglary problems and high rents in the past. Beeston is considerably cheaper to live in and equally well-connected to the city by public transport.

Academic Strengths and Research Profile

Leeds Met's research portfolio is diverse and offers something for most academic interests. Courses at the university include Art, Design, Business and Management, Construction and the Built Environment, Politics and Sport Performance, among others.  

Tuition Fees

Undergraduate courses currently cost £9,000 per year. Fees for international students and postgraduates vary.    

Financial Support: A variety of scholarships and means-tested bursaries are available to undergraduates and postgraduates. Check the university website for more details.

Academic Facilities

The university has two libraries - one on the City Campus and one in Headingley. Both are open seven days a week and offer access to over 700,000 books, multimedia sources, journals and newspapers. Labs, lecture halls and classrooms at the university are all modern and of a good standard.  

Other on-site Amenities

As you would expect, the university's student union has eating and drinking needs covered. LMSU also offer opportunities to get involved in student media, sports clubs, interest societies and volunteering.  

Medical and Social Care

Students moving to Leeds from outside the city are able to register with a GP using the NHS service finder. Meanwhile, a multi-faith chaplaincy service is available, serving students from both Leeds Met and the University of Leeds.

What's on in the Area

Leeds city centre is one of the most varied and attractive in the country, home to historic landmarks including the Corn Exchange and Victoria Quarter. Students are never short of cultural opportunities, with multiple art galleries, theatres and live music venues close to the City Campus. Needless to say, Leeds is great for nights out - the centre alone contains a different pub, club or bar for each night of the week.  

Moving On

The university runs an extensive careers service for active students and graduates. The experienced team offer an impartial advice service and assist students with finding part-time, term-time and graduate jobs.

Famous Leeds Met alumni include singer-songwriter Marc Almond, sprinter Richard Buck, Rugby Union player Austin Healey and two of the Kaiser Chiefs. The university has a third campus in Bhopal, India, and has awardedGeoffrey Boycott, Dame Fanny Waterman, Sir George Martin and James Caan honorary degrees in recent years.  

Is Leeds Metropolitan University the place for you?

For big city opportunity with a side order of study, Leeds Met makes an ideal choice. Academics beware, however; the university doesn't have a sparkling research reputation or strong graduate employment employment record. For Russell Group teaching in a bustling city, trythe University of York or Sheffield instead.
