About The University of Hull

Address and Location

Hull university is split over two campuses: Scarborough and Hull, both overlooking the scenic Humber Estuary and some of the most beautiful countryside in England. Leeds and York are within close proximity.

Background and History

University College Hull was established in 1927 thanks to donations of land and money by local benefactors and the city council. A century of expansion followed, and the university is now home to over 18,000 students.

Location and Accessibility

By Rail: Hull is serviced by high-speed rail links from many UK cities. Most students travel to the Hull Paragon Interchange, then to the main campus by taxi or bus.

By Road: The main university site is a short drive from the M62, or the A63 when travelling via the Humber Bridge.

Accessibility: University campuses are easily navigable and include facilities for students with disabilities. Lecture halls, classrooms and libraries are all fully accessible.

Courses & Fees

Academic Strengths and Research Profile

Hull has an excellent reputation for research in social justice, environmental technology, maritime history, healthcare, 3D visualisation and nanotechnology. Quality of tuition is excellent in most departments of the university.

Tuition fees

Undergraduate courses currently cost £9,000 per year. Fees for international students and postgraduates vary.

Financial Support: A variety of scholarships and means-tested bursaries are available to undergraduates and postgraduates. Check the university website for more details.

Facilities at The University of Hull

Academic Facilities

In recent years, vast sums have been spent on the refurbishment of the university's biomedical facilities and the Wilberforce building, which now features a large lecture theatre with enhanced AV provision and spacious teaching rooms. The former workplace of poet Philip Larkin, the university's Brynmor Jones library has also undergone a dramatic £27.4m renovation. Wi-fi is provided across both university campuses.

Other on-site Amenities

Hull University Union (HUU) is home to a range of facilities, including a travel centre, bookshop, student bank, nightclub, and a range of eateries and bars.

Medical and Social Care

Students are asked to register with a local GP and dental practice upon arrival. All religious views are embraced at the university, which provides a multi-faith worship space for staff and students.

What's on in the Area

There are plenty of scenic walks to be enjoyed in the undulating Yorkshire Wolds and North York Moors. Students with outdoor hobbies can spend their time canoeing, mountaineering and horse-riding. City types can enjoy Hull, home to Europe's deepest aquarium. Beside sea walks, Scarborough also has plenty to do, with entertainment aplenty at the Futurist Theatre and Spa event complex.

Moving on

Services available at the Hull Careers Advice Centre include drop-in guidance sessions, psychometric testing and assistance with writing CVs and dealing with interviews. Regular job fairs give students the opportunity to meet potential employers.

Did you know?

At last count, HUU was home to over 150 active societies, and its nightclub has been voted 'Student Nightclub of the Year' in national surveys. Notable Hull alumni include the poet Roger McGough and film director Anthony Minghella. Perhaps the most famous figure associated with the university, however, was its librarian, the poet Philip Larkin.

Is Hull University the place for you?

For academic excellence and a beautiful countryside setting, few universities come close to Hull. The student community is diverse and friendly and the opportunities to try new things are many. The city can feel isolated, however; Sheffield feels more connected, despite sharing the same Yorkshire landscape.
