University of Hertfordshire

Made up of two modern campuses located side-by-side just outside Hatfield, the University of Hertfordshire's state-of-the-art facilities can be found in miles of leafy parkland. An award-winning library and a selection of cafes and restaurants round out an attractive campus area.  

Background and History

Formerly Hatfield Polytechnic, which specialised in computer science and engineering, the University now specialises in health-related courses, including nursing and midwifery. In 2008, it had the best research score of any post-1992 university.

Location and Accessibility

Hatfield is only twenty minutes away from London King's Cross, and can be reached via the A11. The campus is fully wheelchair accessible and the Disability Service can provide further assistance.

Entry Requirements

For Arts Humanities: Applicants must have a C or above in English language and Maths to apply. 300 UCAS points from two or more A-Levels is the usual offer. For Sciences Engineering: 300 UCAS points from two or more A-Levels is the standard offer. All applicants must have achieved a C or above in English language and Maths.

University Accommodation

Self-catered accommodation ranges from a bed and a desk for £70 a week to en suite rooms for £115 a week.    

Private Accommodation

After the first year of studies, students have to live out. Multiple-occupancy houses and small flats are common in Hatfield and there is a variety of private accommodation on offer for second and third year students.

Faculties and Departments

The University of Hertfordshire is made up of eleven separate schools of study: Hertfordshire Business School, Computer Science, Creative Arts, Education, Engineering and Technology, Health and Social Work, Humanities, Law, Life and Medical Sciences and Physics, Astronomy and Mathematics.  

Academic Strengths and Research Profile

The University's research strengths are largely in the areas of nursing, midwifery and social work, areas that the University has established itself as a market leader in. A Research Assessment Exercise also praised their history, engineering and computing teaching.

Financial Support A range of means-tested maintenance grants are available for students, the size of the grant will depend on your household income.

Academic Facilities

The two campuses both have state-of-the-art Learning Resource Centres, which are open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week during term time, while the online learning resource StudyNet' allows students to access additional learning materials. In addition, laboratory and teaching facilities have been the benefactors of significant investment since 2010, while the DeHavilland campus featuring top-of-the-range research equipment.

Other on-site Amenities

In addition to a thriving bar and a network of restaurants and cafes, in 2009, the University opened The Forum', which features three bars, a restaurant, numerous cafes, and an on-site shop for all the catering needs for students on campus. There are cash points and laundry facilities available across both sites, in addition to a nursery and car park. The £16m Sports Village provides brilliant facilities for students looking to keep fit or to study sports science.

Medical and Social Care

Students are required to register with a local GP. There is a dedicated Pharmacy and medical centre on-site to provide students with medical support, while the Key Centre, a centre for all faiths and none, is also the site for the university's confidential and professional counselling service.  

What's on in the Area

Hatfield is a sleepy town, with only the Hatfield Odeon really meriting a visit. Nearby Welwyn, which is just ten minutes away via the campus bus, or London, which is under half an hour away by train, are the first ports of call for students in search of clubs, music or the arts. There is, however, a thriving independent music scene in nearby St Albans.  

Moving On

The University Careers Service, Graduate Futures, provides support to students throughout their degrees and beyond, supporting them with CV-writing and interview technique. As the majority of students at Hertfordshire undertake a work placement, they are well-prepared for the world of work.

At only twenty minutes from central London, University of Hertfordshire students can have the best of both worlds. The majority of the babies born in Hertfordshire are delivered by a midwife that was trained at the University of Hertfordshire. Brad Barritt, a University of Hertfordshire business student, played rugby for England and was part of the Six Nations squad in 2013.
