About Hartlepool College of Further Education

Address and Location

Teesside University is based in the North of the UK in Middlesbrough. The institution also has a second site in Darlington - Teesside University Darlington - and is rapidly becoming one of the most popular universities in the upper half of the UK, in terms of applications received.
 

Background and History

Originally named Constantine Technical College, Teesside first opened in July 1930, providing a combination of further and higher education programmes. A merger with Teesside College of Education, purchase of the current site in Flatts Lane and development of the Clarendon and Stephenson buildings preceded the college's conversion to full university status in 1992. In October 2009, Teesside University was elected University of the Year in the Times Higher Education Awards.

Location and Accessibility

By Road: The A19 passes within a mile of Middlesbrough. There, the university's main entrance can be found at the intersection of Borough Road and Albert Road.

By Rail: Middlesbrough is 30 minutes away from Darlington Station, which operates direct services to London and Edinburgh. The TransPennine Express runs between Middlesbrough and Newcastle, York, Leeds, Manchester, Manchester Airport and Liverpool.

Accessibility: Most university facilities are wheelchair-accessible and accommodation is provided for students with disabilities.

A full range of foundational, undergraduate and postgraduate degrees including: FdA, FdEng, FdSc, BA, BSc, BEng, LLB, MA, MSc, MPhil and PhD programmes.

Entry Requirements

Entry standards vary between subjects, but all require at least 5 GCSE passes of grade C or above. Specific course information can be found on the university website.

University Accommodation

For students who select Teesside as their first choice, the university guarantees first-year accommodation in one of four halls on campus. All rooms include free internet access.  

Private Accommodation

The university manages a number of terraced houses surrounding the Middlesbrough campus. These are rented from landlords and sublet to students to ensure that second and third-years have adequate accommodation.

Academic Profile and Research Profile

Teesside has won several National Teaching Fellowships in its short history as a university. The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education has also found several departments there provide teaching of "excellence" in art, design, computer science, history, social work, sport, electrical and electronic engineering, nursing, chemical technology and a number of medical subjects.  

Tuition Fees

Undergraduate courses currently cost £9,000 per year. Fees for international students and postgraduates vary.

Academic Facilities

In past years, Teesside's library resources have been voted in the top ten in the UK and number one in the North-East (National Student Survey 2012). The university's facilities as a whole were ranked as second best in the country in the 2001 Whatuni Student Choice Awards. Wi-fi access is provided across both campuses and laboratory facilities are of a high standard.

Centuria South is the university's £17m sport and health sciences building. This advanced dental education and sports therapy complex provides a state-of-the-art learning environment for students, while a second £6.5m sports centre in the Olympia Building provides a sports hall, squash courts and a floodlit all-weather games pitch.  

Medical and Social Care

Teesside University is committed to nurturing the physical, social, psychological and spiritual well-being of its students and staff. The university provides a dedicated Well-Being Centre and students can also seek confidential advice at the Student Centre in the Clarendon Building.  

What's on in the Area

The Tees Valley provides an attractive combination of city, countryside and coast. Middlesbrough is host to an exciting programme of live music, comedy, theatre and exhibitions, and the vibrant town centre is packed with a great choice of shops, restaurants, bars, nightclubs and entertainment venues. Elsewhere, students are often found relaxing in Centre Square or one of the many parks dotted around town.

Moving On

Teesside runs an extensive careers service for students, hosting job fairs, advice sessions and helping students organise work experience placements.

Did you know?

In 2010, Teesside was a runner-up in the Times Higher Education Entrepreneurial University of the Year Award. Marek Reichman studied industrial design at the university, he has since been responsible for the styling of Aston Martin's new generation of supercars, including those driven by James Bond in 'Casino Royale'.
