About Osteopathic Education and Research Limited

Greenwich's main campus is located on the south bank of the Thames on the site of the Old Royal Navy College. It has further campuses at Dartford and Medway in Kent. Where you spend most of your time will be decided by which campus your subject is taught on so it's worth making sure whether you'll be in London or Kent!

Background and History

Greenwich started out as Woolwich Polytechnic in 1890 and has had a succession of mergers since then including with Dartford College, parts of Goldsmiths College and the City of London College. In 1992 the Polytechnic became the University of Greenwich and the modern institution was born.

Location and Accessibility

By Rail: The Greenwich campus is served by the DLR from the Cutty Sark station and national rail services from Maze Hill Rail.

By Road: Access to the campus is available just off the A2 however parking is extremely limited on the campus and it is not advised to drive there if at all avoidable.

Most facilities are wheelchair friendly and accommodation is available that has been specially designed for usage by people with disabilities.

Entry Requirements

The standard entry offer is 240 UCAS points but courses vary and subjects with mathematical content will be higher. Examples of entry requirements include:

Chemistry: 260 UCAS points plus 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, BTEC accepted.

Geography: 260 UCAS points plus 3 GCSEs at grade C or above, BTEC accepted.

History: 240 UCAS points plus English GCSE at grade C or above.

University Accommodation

Prices for the different campuses vary but at Greenwich expect to pay between £110 and £170 a week, which is not too bad considering the rather luxurious location in Greenwich Park and the views of the Thames.

Private Accommodation

South East London has many opportunities for cheap housing whilst still offering good local services and amenities. Expect to pay between £300-700 for a room in a shared house although Greenwich town centre will be at the upper end of this range.

Faculties and Departments

The University of Greenwich is divided into a number of distinct schools and departments, these are: the School of Architecture, Design and Construction, the Business School, the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences, the School of Engineering, Greenwich Maritime Institute, the School of Health and Social Care, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Natural Resources Institute and the School of Science

Academic Strengths and Research Profile

Throughout its history Greenwich has had a focus on the natural and applied sciences, although it has recently expanded this offering through the creation of a business school. The Maritime Institute is extremely prominent in its field and has very strong links with industry.

Tuition Fees

Tuition fees are likely to vary depending on the course of study. Fees are also likely to be higher for International students than those for UK/EU students. It is advisable to contact the University directly or visit their website for more information.

Financial Support

Financial support is available including a High Achievement Scholarship for students with AAB or above at A-level.

Academic Facilities

A new library, in Greenwich town centre has been built to provide extra room for the Architecture School. Other facilities at the Greenwich campus include: IT rooms, language laboratories and seminar rooms.

 

Other on-site Amenities

A campus bus provides access between the various buildings at Greenwich which house a range of cafes, meeting and social spaces. The Student Union run a campus bar, however most of the sports facilities are at the Avery Hill campus so expect to have to travel if you want to take part in university sports.

Medical and Social Care

The Avery Hill campus has its own medical centre whereas students living on the other campuses will have to register with a local GP. A chaplaincy provides pastoral care and religious needs and each campus has its own prayer rooms. Childcare provision is available at the Avery Hill campus.

What's on in the Area

Greenwich is teeming with galleries, museums and historical buildings, not to mention a mass of quaint riverside pubs and restaurants. Nearby is the O2 arena which hosts concerts and other events and not too far away is the Tate Gallery and the South Bank Centre. For nightlife students can either venture to the music scene in New Cross or take the trip over the Thames into central London and Soho.

Moving On

There are strong links with industry at the university and placements and internships can be secured through some courses. Employability statistics are not as high as some other universities but a number of schemes are available for students to practice interview techniques and CV writing with experts on campus.
