About The University of East Anglia

The University of East Anglia is a small campus university with a welcoming atmosphere, located just outside the city of Norwich. A stunning mixture of award-winning architecture from the 1960s to the present makes the University of East Anglia one of England's most visually arresting campuses.

Background and History

Founded in 1963, the University of East Anglia is based in Norwich and has a history of research and academic excellence. As part of the 1994 group, it is a respected research university across a range of subjects, such as Science, Social Sciences, Medicine and Health Sciences, and the Arts and Humanities.

Location and Accessibility

Located in parkland with easy access to Norwich city centre, the University can be reached via direct train from London in two hours, with trains departing and arriving every half hour. Norwich can be reached via the South through the M11, A11, A12 and from the North via the A14, A47, and M1.

The major libraries and lecture theatres have wheelchair access, while there are provisions for students with mobility issues within the modern accommodation blocks.

What's on Offer

BA, BSc, MA, MSci, MBA, MPhil, PhD, Post-graduate Certificate, Post-graduate Diploma.

Entry Requirements

The majority of the University's admissions officers make their offers on a specified subject basis, but some departments may employ the new UCAS tariff to make points offers.

Where an offer is stated in terms of UCAS points, further conditions will usually be made, eg 300 points to include B in a science A-level. All applicants must have achieved at least a C in GCSE English and Maths.

Accommodation at The University of East Anglia

University Accommodation

Self-catered accommodation is available for 38-week rental for first year students. Second and third years must live out.

Private Accommodation

Average rent per person per month in Norwich ranges from £350 per person per month for a single room in a house, to around £400 per person per month for multiple-occupancy middle-range housing. The most you should expect to spend for a two-bedroom house would be £500 per month, but that is the absolute upper limit.

Courses & Fees

Faculties and Departments

The University of East Anglia is divided into four distinct faculties. The Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Academic Strengths and Research Profile

The University of East Anglia has strong research skills across a range of subjects, both traditional and non-traditional, including English, History and languages. Particular areas of strength include development studies and climate science, where the UEA is a world-leader. It contributed more than any other university in the world to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Tuition Fees

Undergraduate courses currently cost £9,000, while fees for overseas and international students vary. For further information visit the university website.

Financial Support

A variety of Scholarships may be offered to UK/EU and International students. Scholarships are normally awarded to students on the basis of academic merit and are usually for the duration of the period of study. There are also a range of grants, bursaries and fee waivers available for lower-income students.

Facilities at The University of East Anglia

Academic Facilities

The campus library has over 800,000 books and journals, and is open seven days a week, 24 hours a day. The IT area has 260 web-linked PCs for the use of students, with online journal subscriptions to all the major academic periodicals.

Other on-site Amenities

The University of East Anglia regularly tops student satisfaction surveys when it comes to on-site services. The campus has everything you'll ever need, on-site ATMs and banking facilities, a Waterstone's bookshop, food store, newsagent, travel agent, 24-hour laundrette and a pharmacy can all be found on-site. For social occasions, there are a range of cafes and bars from sit-down to take-out, with cuisines from Indian to Italian.

Medical and Social Care

There is campus medical provision and an on-site confidential counselling service. In addition, there is an on-site comprehensive medical service, providing full dental and medical support. Students are required to register with either a local GP or the campus services. The on-site medical provision is highly rated by students, so it's worthwhile registering with the campus services.

What's on in the Area

Norwich was recently voted one of the best small cities in the world, and it has a variety of night clubs, bars, restaurants, museums and cinemas, while the on-site provision of restaurants and bars makes UEA one of the best campuses in the country.

Moving On

In addition to providing careers support throughout the University, including support with applications, interviews and CV-writing, the University Careers Service continues to offer support after graduation.

Did you know?

The University of East Anglia has three Booker Prize winning novelists amongst its alumni: Ian McEwan, Anne Enright, and Kazuo Ishiguro. In 2009, the University was at the centre of controversy over climate change statistics, but was later exonerated. The world-leading Climate Research Unit not only influences politicians, but helped to inspire the hit film The Day After Tomorrow.
