The college was established in 1893 and has specialised in training for land-based industries and organisations for 110 years. It attracts students from over 50 international countries and its Design School was ranked 4th nationally in the Guardian League Table of 2012.

Situated two miles outside of Chelmsford, the main Writtle campus is just a few minutes' walk from the major bus route through Writtle village.
