The origins of Bournemouth University can be traced back to the foundation of Bournemouth Municipal College in the early twentieth century. Its successor, Bournemouth College of Technology, was created in the 1970s on the present Talbot campus. The college was renamed twice before becoming a polytechnic in 1990. In 1992 the institute was awarded university status and the power to award its own degrees.
