Thought of as one of the world's leading centres for the study of the history and conservation of art and architecture, the Courtauld Institute of Art doubles up as a prestigious academic institution and art gallery. The institute is located in central London at Somerset House, neighbouring Kings' College University on the Strand.
Background and History
The institute was founded by the politician Viscount Lee of Fareham, the industrialist Samuel Courtauld, and the lawyer Sir Robert Witt in 1932. The institute was originally located in Portman Square, until the move to Somerset House in 1989.
Location and Accessibility
Perched on the North side of the River Thames, the Courtauld's central London location makes it very accessible, with close proximity to Temple and Embankment tube stations.
