Osmosis and Temperature

Osmosis is a specific type of diffusion which refers to water moving from an area of higher water potential to one of lower water potential across a partially permeable membrane.

Water is a polar molecule and so is able to pass across the lipid bilayer. Osmosis creates a specific pressure known as osmotic pressure. It’s created due to the difference in potentials across the semi-permeable membrane. The pressure causes the water to move from the higher to the lower concentration. When equilibrium is reached the pressure stops. This scenario is known as isotonic: there’s no net movement of water because the concentrations are at equilibrium.

Temperature

Enzymes have an optimum temperature which is the temperature at which they are most active. This optimum is different depending on the enzyme. In mammals it’s around 40
