  • Sponsorship is very big within the sporting world. However, it’s no longer legal for cigarette companies to provide sponsorship and rarely alcohol corporations.
  • Usually the more media coverage a sporting event gets the more sponsorship it will receive.
  • Sponsorship has both advantages and disadvantages to those involved.
  • Media coverage takes a number of different formats. However, at the end of the day it’s the director who decides what is shown.
  • As with sponsorship, media coverage has both advantages and disadvantages.
  • Today, many sportspeople are considered as role models. In this respect, it’s more important for them to keep a check on their behaviour.
  • Amateurs play sport for fun while professionals train for competitions.
  • International games can lead to social and political problems.
  • Sporting facilities can be publicly owned or privately financed.

i. Berlin, 1936: The Nazis used the Olympic Games in order to spread their fascist ideas worldwide. This was also the first year in which the games were televised. The US nearly boycotted because of political reasons but then decided to participate at the last minute.

ii. Melbourne, 1956: Spain, the Netherlands and Switzerland boycotted the Olympics because of restrictions that had been put in place by the Hungarian Uprising by the Soviet Union. Lebanon, Egypt, Iraq and Cambodia also boycotted the event due to the Suez Crisis.

iii. Mexico City, 1968: Two black athletes, Tommie Smith and John Carlos, performed the black power salute on the victory stand after winning the two hundred track and field races. Avery Brundage, the IOC’s autocratic president, was so angry that he told the USOC that they either got sent home or the whole track and field team was to be withdrawn. In the end, the two runners had to go back home.

Some top tips!

  1. Print out the Test It! Questions – it will allow you to replicate exam conditions and also allows you to give your eyes a rest from the computer screen whilst doing your crucial revision.
  2. Make a copy of the Remember It! Section and put in a place that you often look at. i.e. front of a journal, next to a mirror, on a kitchen cupboard door, etc. That way you can do some cheeky PE revision whilst doing those things you have to do!
