Background and History

The University of Sheffield in its current guise was founded in 1905, although its roots stretches back to 1828 and the establishment of the Sheffield School of Medicine. The institution is one of the UK's six 'red brick' universities - those founded in the country's industrial centres - and a member of the Russell Group of universities practising research excellence.

Location and Accessibility

By Rail: The university site is a 15-minute walk from Sheffield Station. Walk out of the station past Sheaf Square fountain. Cross the road on to Howard Street, past the Sheffield Hallam University campus and towards The Globe pub. Climb the set of steps that follow, cross the road and head up Surrey Street, past the Crucible Theatre to Sheffield City Hall. From here the university's departments are all a short walk away.

By road: Depending on direction, Netherthorpe Road and Hanover Way both lead directly to the university. Parking on-site is limited, so visitors are encouraged to find parking spots in the city centre. The multi-storey on Wellington Street is closest to the university.

Accessibility: Most buildings and facilities are wheelchair-friendly, and accommodation is available for students with disabilities.
