Background and History

In 1992, Newcastle Polytechnic became Northumbria University, following the UK-wide shift to university status for similar colleges. Three years later, the university was made responsible for training healthcare professionals in place of the National Health Service. Today the university functions as part of the University Alliance, a group of twenty four business-engaged universities across the UK.

Location and Accessibility

By Rail: Newcastle is easily reached from north or south. For the City campus, take the Metro (the city's underground network) from Central Station to Four Ends Lane. For Coach Lane, use the Number 1 bus that leaves from the front of the station.

By Road: Reaching Newcastle is easy thanks to the main North-South A1 route that runs alongside the city. Visitors to the City campus are advised to head into the city centre and park in one of the many public car parks, as parking is not available on-site. To reach Coach Lane, connect to the A188 from the motorway and follow the road until Cochrane Park, which sits next to the campus.

Accessibility: Most university facilities are wheelchair-accessible, and accommodation is provided for students with disabilities.
