About The University of Bath
Address and Location
Bath University is set on a medium-sized campus in Claverton Down, one mile east of the picturesque Roman city of Bath.
Background and History
One of England's newer 'traditional' universities, Bath's history goes back to the founding of the Bristol Trade School in 1856. In 1960 the college was adopted by Government to become Bristol College of Science and Technology. Continuing to expand, the institution moved a larger site in Bath four years later, giving the university its current footprint. In 1966 the University of Bath was granted a royal charter and began awarding degrees in its own name.
Location and Accessibility
By rail: The university's nearest train station is Bath Spa. Regular buses run from the station to the campus.
By road: The campus is located on the east side of the city. From the M4 motorway, join the A46 southbound at Junction 18 and follow signs for Warminster. Exit at North Road/Claverton Down and the university is on the left.
Accessibility: Most university facilities are wheelchair-accessible, and all major buildings have ramps, lifts and accessible toilets. Accommodation for those with additional needs is available on campus.

University Accommodation
The university provides a range of accommodation on campus, all of which is self-catered. Woodland, Marlborough and Solsbury Courts are all modern halls, while Eastwood, Westwood and Brendon Court are characterful historical buildings.
Private Accommodation
Bath can prove an expensive city to live in, although prices drop sharply outside of the city centre. The university is on hand to help students find accommodation in their second and third year of study.

Academic Strengths and Research Profile
Much of the university's research is of international standard. Bath has ranked in the top 200 of the QS world university rankings for its teaching in engineering, IT and social science. Programmes in accounting and finance, business, maths and the humanities also place highly in British league tables.

Academic Facilities
At the heart of the campus is the university's Library and Learning Centre, open 24/7 and offering computing services, research assistance, books and journals. Wi-fi is provided across campus. Lab facilities at the university are excellent, an important factor in Bath's world-standing in engineering and the sciences.
Other On-site Amenities
The university prides itself on its sports provision, offering squash, tennis and badminton courts, an athletics track, various pitches and sports halls and two swimming pools. The newly-renovated ICIA Arts Theatre provides space for music, dance and drama. Also on campus are two supermarkets, a bookshop, post office, two banks, a travel agent and a multitude of places to eat, drink and socialise.

The University Medical and Dental Practice provides a range of NHS services, while the chaplaincy and Student Health and Wellbeing Team offer pastoral support to students.
What's On in the Area
Bath is one of the UK's most beautiful cities. Alongside the historic Roman Baths, Victoria Art Gallery and Holbourne Museum, various arts events are held throughout the year, including the annual Bath Festival. Shoppers are particularly well-served. Bristol's eclectic nightclub scene is only 12 minutes away by train, while London is a 90 minute journey in the other direction.

The Bath campus was recently awarded a Police Security Award, making it one of the safest places for students in the UK. Alumni of the university include DJ Neil Fox, Blur bassist Alex James and former Prime Minister of Tanzania, Edward Lowassa.
Is Bath the place for you?
Those applying for engineering and science subjects should strongly consider Bath. The university has a large student community, excellent sporting facilities and happens to be based in a beautiful 'world heritage' city, of which there are only two in the world. Venice is the other. For a more 'urban' experience, try nearby Bristol or UCL in London, both of which share a similar reputation.
