Information

About London School of Economics and Political Science

LSE is situated within the City of Westminster between Covent Garden, Holborn and Aldwych and across the road from King's College. There are 30 academic buildings centred on the old Clare Market, extending up to the picturesque Lincoln's Inn Fields. Founded by a group of Fabians in 1896, LSE quickly became part of the University of London and began issuing degrees. Since then it has become a powerhouse of research into social and political science, attracting huge amounts of research funding and students from around the world.

Location and Accessibility

By Rail: The nearest underground stations are Holborn, Temple and Covent Garden which provide connections throughout London. Charing Cross is the nearest national rail connection with Waterloo station also reasonably close by.

By Road: Driving to LSE is not advised as it is within the congestion charging zone and parking is limited in central London. A number of bus services stop at Kingsway and Aldwych and many of them run 24 hours a day.

Most facilities are wheelchair friendly and accommodation is available designed for usage by people with disabilities.

Entry Requirements

LSE has very strict entry requirements and is highly competitive for places. As well as the standard conditions LSE also requests that students take a maximum of one subject at A-level from the list of non-preferred' subjects and that re-takes of exams are minimised.

Accommodation at London School of Economics and Political Science

University Accommodation

Halls of Residence are focused around the main campus with a couple further away just south of the river. A great deal of flexibility is available as catered and self-catered halls are available and the length of renting periods ranges from 30 to 50 weeks so students can choose a plan that suits them. Costs depend on the amount of shared facilities and whether meals are provided.

Private Accommodation

Central London can be prohibitively expensive to rent in meaning many students will move further a field in their second and third years. Outside zone 1 a single room in a shared house can be anything from £400-700 a month depending on location (proximity to a tube station is always a big factor). A number of private companies offer halls of residences to university students which offer flexible terms but can be more expensive than a normal landlord.

Courses & Fees

Faculties and Departments

LSE is split into many schools and departments, these include: Accountancy, Economic History, International Relations, Law, Mathematics, Social Policy and Statistics.

Academic Strengths and Research Profile

LSE has never been ranked outside the top ten institutions in the UK in a newspaper league table and consistently ranks highly in the world. The Economics, Social Science and Philosophy departments are considered to be some of the best in the world with the MSc Econometrics and Mathematical Economics being recognised as one of the five most prestigious degrees in the world.

Tuition Fees

Tuition fees vary depending on the course of study chosen and whether you wish to study at undergraduate or postgraduate level. Fees for international students are also likely to be considerably higher than for UK/EU students. For further information it is advisable to contact the university directly or visit the university website.

Facilities at London School of Economics and Political Science

Academic Facilities

LSE has a large provision of IT for students including quiet study areas, group study rooms and general computing rooms. The university library is the world's largest for social and political science and the lecture theatres host academics, politicians and celebrity speakers from around the world in televised events.

Other on-site Amenities

A number of social spaces are available to students including roof terraces, quads, music practice rooms, Lincoln's Inn Fields and departmental common rooms. There is a wealth of eating options on campus ranging from snack style cafes to restaurants and pub food in the university owned George IV pub. Some sports facilities (gyms, squash and badminton courts etc) are available on campus but for football and rugby travel to the university playing fields in New Maldon (20 minutes via train from Waterloo) is necessary. Shops, banks and a post office are also available on campus.

Medical and Social Care

There is a medical centre and dental practice on campus as well as a nursery offering childcare facilities. A chaplaincy offers religious services and there are also a number of multi-prayer rooms as well as dedicated Muslim prayer rooms.

Moving On

LSE ranks very highly for student and employer satisfaction with high rates of student employability. The careers service is on hand for advice and CV-writing workshops and a number of events are held throughout the year for recruiters to come onto campus and meet students.

Did you know?

There are 17 Nobel Laureates amongst the alumni staff and former staff of LSE. Notable former lecturers include former Prime Ministers Clement Atlee and Ramsay Macdonald as well as Mervyn King, the Governor of the Bank of England.

Is LSE the place for you?

If you want to study in the heart of one the most vibrant cities in the world then the fast pace of LSE and London life could be for you. LSE has a fantastic international reputation and many students go on to careers in finance and related industries. Accommodation and living expenses are high in London so expect to have to budget. Other options in London that would be worth considering are Imperial, King's or UCL.
